VBBIH vs. Winchendon School: CA-2; WS-3 EXHIBITION

Winchendon School - 3
Cushing Academy - 2

The Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey team opened their 2019-2020 campaign with an exhibition game against Rt. 12 rival Winchendon School.  It was an opportunity for the players to get some ice time, get comfortable with new teammates, and learn some lessons on things to improve upon for when the regular season games begin after Thanksgiving Break.

The end result was not what the Penguins had hoped for, but they will use it to build for the season.  Cushing built an early 1-0 lead in the first period with a big goal from forward John Lessard ‘20 and the assist coming from Parker Davis ‘23 and Ryan Ebensberger ‘20.  The Penguin goal fired up the Wapiti and they began flying and taking the play right at the Penguins. Cushing goalie Ben Speyer ‘20 (33 saves) shut the door in the first period, but a couple second period goals from Winchendon allowed them a 2-1 lead after two periods.

The third period saw Cushing in a 5-on-3 penalty kill after taking a 5-minute major and a 2-minute minor penalty.  The five minutes of penalty killing had the rotation of Brian Lemay ‘21, Josh Levesque ‘20, Aidan Gorman ‘22, Trevor Hada ‘20, and Caleb Vogel ‘20 standing firm and killing off both penalties.  The kill brought an emotion lift to the Penguins and despite dominating the last 13 minutes of the game, they could not find the back of the net for the equalizer. With two minutes left in the game, Winchendon took a 3-1 lead after a tipped goal.  Cushing didn’t give up and kept pushing as Hada scored top-shelf with only 30 seconds left on the clock and the assist came from Brendan Dougherty ‘20. This goal brought Cushing to within one at 3-2, but it was as close as they came and the Penguins fell to the Wapiti.

Cushing will head off on their Thanksgiving Break and return to the ice for their next game on Wednesday, December 4th when they head to Dexter Southfield School for a 3:30pm game.

Exhibition Record: 0-1
