VBB vs. Sunrise Christian Academy: CA-73; SCA-81

Sunrise Christian Academy - 81
Cushing Academy - 73

The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team traveled to Albertus Magnus College on Sunday to play in the 2019 National Prep Showcase before heading off on their weeklong Thanksgiving Break.  With scouts from NBA teams and over 40 colleges, it was a great chance for the Penguins to make an impression and open some eyes while playing against a deep Sunrise Christian Academy squad.

The Penguins would find themselves in a big hole on the scoreboard early on in the game and entered the locker room at the halftime break down by 13 points.  Guard Bensley Joseph ‘21 was one of the major reasons the Penguins remained in the game despite the deficit as he dropped double digits in the first half. Jack Gumbert ‘20 provided solid minutes off the bench in his season debut.

The Penguins refused to go down without a fight and dug themselves back into the game in the second half.  While Joseph was one of the main scorers in the first half, the second half would see more spread scoring from the team as they cut into the Sunrise Christian lead.  Daniel Braster ‘20 contributed 14 points while Isaiah Gray ‘20 added 10 points of his own. This team effort would see the Penguins cut the lead down to 3 points, but they never acquired the lead. Coby Gold ‘20 hit a couple big three point shots down the stretch and Jaden Bobbett ‘21 had a very strong defensive performance in the loss.

The Penguins will return to the game court at St. Andrews School on Friday, December 16th when they tip-off against Masters School at 4:30pm.
