VBBIH vs. Dexter Southfield School: CA-2; DSS-4

Dexter Southfield School - 4
Cushing Academy - 2

The Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey Penguins traveled to Brookline, Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon for their first game post-Thanksgiving Break against Dexter Southfield School.

Dexter Southfield came out of the locker room flying and outshot the Penguins 17-3 in the first period, but Ben Speyer ‘20 stood tall in net by only allowing a single goal and kept the Penguins in the game.  Despite the Dexter Southfield offensive onslaught, the Penguins were only down 1-0 going into the first intermission.

An early second period goal by Dexter Southfield put the home team up 2-0 before a Nicky Jun ‘23 goal cut the lead to 2-1.  Jun rushed down the wing to take an off-speed shot that found its way to the back of the Dexter Southfield net and Jun recorded his first goal as a Cushing Penguin.  Entering the second intermission it remained 2-1 in favor of the home team.

The Penguins emerged from the locker room to start the third period with momentum, energy, and a drive to get the score knotted up.  The third period shots were in the Penguins favor at 10-7 with one of those ten getting behind the Dexter Southfield goaltender for a Trevor Hada ‘20 goal.  This knotted the score at 2-2 and the Penguins pushed hard to try to take the lead, but unfortunately a late Dexter Southfield goal put them ahead 3-2. Cushing had frantic offensive pushes towards the net and pulled Speyer for the extra skater.  With the Penguins having the extra skater, they upped the energy and peppered the Dexter Southfield net, but came up just short when Dexter Southfield would slot an empty netter to take the 4-2 win.

Speyer had a great game between the pipes for Cushing as he had 32 solid saves.  Andrew Wolfe ‘23 made his presence known on the penalty kill and the coaches look forward to watching him continue to grow in his role on this unit.

It will be two days of practice for the Penguins before they get back on the ice against New Hampton School on Saturday, December 7th.  Cushing will welcome the Huskies to Iorio Arena for a 4:00pm game.
