In a spirited and gutsy effort, the Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey team played their best game of the young season in an overtime effort on home ice against the Huskies of New Hampton School.
It was a scoreless affair until just under two minutes left in the game when Seamus Cummings ‘22 went into the offensive zone on a breakaway and sniped the goalie glove high to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead late. The Cummings’ goal was assisted by Brendan Dougherty ‘20. In what would be an emotional rollercoaster, the Huskies pulled their goalie for the extra skater and the gamble paid off as they scored to tie the game 1-1 and send it into overtime.
Despite the ups and downs of the last two minutes of regulation, the Penguins reevaluated their game and played hard in overtime. With two minutes left in OT, defenseman Aidan Gorman ‘22 fired a shot from the point that made its way through the traffic in front of the net and into the back of the Huskies’ net for the game-winner. The assists on the game-winner went to Bobby Nabozny ‘23 and Brian Lemay ‘20.
It was a huge victory for the Penguins squad as they executed the game plan with breakouts, slot coverage, and zone entries. The defensive core of Lemay, Gorman, Luke Kowalka ‘20, and Josh Levesque ‘20 played excellent in front of Penguins’ goalie Ben Speyer ‘20. Speyer ended the afternoon with 27 saves on 28 shots. The Penguins rolled four lines throughout most of the game and notable performances were turned in by the white like of Trevor Hada ‘20, Dougherty, and Cummings as well as the gold line of Max Wasserstein ‘21, Nabozny, and Nicky Jun ‘23. It was a great day for the team!
Next up for the Penguins will be a Wednesday, December 11th match-up on the road against the Belmont Hill School. Opening face-off is scheduled for 2:15pm at Belmont Hill’s home rink.
