VBB vs. Canterbury School: CA-62; CS-60

Cushing Academy - 62
Canterbury School - 60

The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team loaded up the buses and traveled down to Babson College to play in the annual Scholar Roundball Classic Invitational Tournament.  The Penguins would face off against the formidable Saints of The Canterbury School.

It was a back-and-forth game between the Penguins and the Saints with neither team taking a large lead for a majority of the game.  When one team went on a run, the other would inevitably hit a big shot to stop the run and cut into the lead. The Penguins relied heavily on Alexis Matos-Reyes ‘21 and Bensley Joseph ‘21 for the team’s big baskets.  Matos-Reyes led the Penguins in scoring with 14 points and Joseph saved his best shot for his last shot. The Penguins saw an 8-point lead diminish in the final minutes of the game to find themselves tied with the Saint with only seven seconds left on the clock.  It was here when Joseph hit the biggest basket of the game for the Penguins as he drove into the lane and scored on a pull-up jumper as the clock hit zero to give Cushing the two-point win.

While Joseph and Reyes were the scoring leaders for the day, the unsung moments of the game belonged to Malachi Ndur ‘20 and Joseph.  Ndur, finding himself in foul trouble for the majority of the afternoon, took a charge in the final stretch of the game to swing momentum into the Penguins favor.  Also helping pull momentum in the Cushing favor was Joseph when he took another charge to amp up the Cushing team and help put them into a position to win.

The Penguins return to action, again on the road, when they travel to Springfield, MA on Wednesday, December 18th to take on the Phoenix of Andrews Osbourne Academy.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8:45pm
