In their first game back from the winter break, the Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team opened the 2020 calendar year on the road in Tilton, New Hampshire taking on the Tilton School Rams. It was a league matchup and vital the Penguins came out sharp and on top of their game to get the victory in order to stay undefeated in the league.
It was evident to start the game that it was the first game back from break as the Penguins were rusty and didn’t start off well. The Rams dominated the Penguins on the offensive glass and this allowed the Rams to put the Penguins into a hole to start. Once the Cushing team shook out their bus legs and brushed off the winter vacation rust, the momentum would quickly swerve into the Penguins’ favor. The Penguins were led in scoring in the first half by Malachi Ndur ‘20 with 9 points, by Bensley Joseph ‘21 in the distribution category, and by Isaiah Gray ‘20 on the offensive glass with his rebound put-backs. Into the locker room at the half time break went the Penguins with a 12 point lead over the hometown Rams.
During the second half, it would be much the same as the first half for the Penguins. They would defend to the best of their ability and push their lead up to 20 points. Anytime the Rams seemed to gain momentum to make a run, there was Daniel Braster ‘20 coming up with a big score to end the Rams’ run. Braster finished the afternoon with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Joseph hit double digits in points and assists for a double-double. Toby Okani ‘20, playing in his first game for the Penguins, picked up 8 points in his debut. Also picking up points and contributing to the win in his season debut was Sean Okpoebo ‘20 with 2 points. Jack Gumbert ‘20 put up 7 points in the game to help seal the victory.
The Penguins remain on the road as they travel to the Bronx, New York tomorrow, Sunday, January 12th for an 11:40am match-up against powerhouse Blair Academy in the Empire Invitational.
