The Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey team headed to Exeter, New Hampshire to take on the Big Red of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Cushing built an early 1-0 lead on a rebound goal by Andrew Wolf ‘23 with the assists going to John Lessard ‘20 and Ryan Ebensberger ‘20. Exeter struck late in the first on the powerplay to tie the game up before heading into the locker rooms for the first intermission.
The second period had Exeter putting one into the back of the Cushing net to push the game out of a deadlock and put the home team ahead 2-1. Captain Trevor Hada ‘20 put the Penguins on his back at this point and worked until he stuffed home a puck sitting on the goal line to bring them back even with Exeter. The teams headed to locker rooms for the second intermission tied-up 2-2.
In the third period, the Penguins regained the lead 3-2 on a Caleb Vogel ‘20 goal. Exeter refused to go away and had successive strikes into the Cushing net to take a 4-3 lead, which is how the game would end.
Strong games were turned in by the defensive core of Luke Kowalka ‘20, Brian Lemay ‘21, Aidan Gorman ‘22, Michael Fluty ‘23, and Josh Levesque ‘20. Between the pipes for the Penguins was Ben Speyer ‘20, who once again had a solid game facing a multitude of shots from the Big Red skaters. The Penguins put forth a consistent and strong effort, but the execution was lacking so they will be hitting the ice for practice over the next two days to work on the execution prior to their next game.
The Penguins will welcome rival Avon Old Farms School this Saturday, January 17th at 5:00pm in Iorio Arena.
