The Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey team hosted the Winged Beavers of Avon Old Farms School on Saturday afternoon. Cushing and Avon are Rust Cup rivals and every game is a battle between them with Saturday’s game being no different, although the Penguins were on the unfortunate end of a 2-1 score when the final buzzer sounded.
Cushing executed their game plan early on when they got pucks deep with their forecheck to generate chances on the Winged Beavers’ net. The Penguins were rewarded for this work when Brendan Dougherty ‘20 stuffed one home on an assist by Caleb Vogel ‘20. The Winged Beavers struck back with about two minutes left in the first period to draw the score even at 1-1, which is how the teams finished the first period.
The second period was split at the midway point for an ice cut, but the change in routine didn’t seem to throw either team for a loop. The teams battled throughout the period, but neither the Penguins nor the Winged Beavers broke through for a goal.
The third period started with the teams still knotted at 1-1 on the scoreboard. Avon had the deeper bench on this day and they wore down the Cushing team resulting in the majority of possession in the third being in the Cushing defensive third. One of the Winged Beavers picked up a loose puck late in the period and put a shot into the Cushing net for the 2-1 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the game. The Penguins pulled Ben Speyer ‘20 for the extra skater and had some chances to tie it, but came up just short.
Speyer was excellent between the pipes for the Penguins making some key saves to keep the score tied or within one. Playing hard offensively were the red line of Ryan Kralovec ‘22, Parker Davis ‘23, and Seamus Cummings ‘22 and the white line of Dogherty, Vogel, and Trevor Hada ‘20.
It was a great battle between the squads and they look forward to a hopeful rematch in the finals of the Rust Cup at the end of February. Until then it’s back to business this Monday, January 20th when the Penguins host the Wapiti of Winchendon School at 5:00pm.
