VBBIH vs. Winchendon School: CA-2; WS-3

Winchendon School - 3
Cushing Academy - 2

The Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey team welcomed Route 2 rivals Winchendon School Wapiti to Iorio Arena for a rare Monday evening tilt.

The Penguins outshot the Wapiti early and often, but Winchendon struck first for the 1-0 lead when two Cushing players collided in the defensive zone and the Winchendon players took advantage of the confusion.  Facing the 1-0 deficit, the Penguins began to take it to the Wapiti and had numerous scoring chances on the Winchendon net, but each and every chance was denied. It wasn’t until the third period when Cushing finally broke through as Brendan Dougherty ‘20 sniped the Wapiti goalie glove-side high through a screen to knot the game 1-1.  The assists on the Dougherty goal went to Caleb Vogel ‘20 and Michael Fluty ‘23. The momentum switch towards the Cushing bench was quickly flipped back to the Winchendon bench when the Wapiti capitalized on a rare Ben Speyer ‘20 puck handling mistake and they fired the puck into an empty Penguin net for the 2-1 lead. With momentum on their side, the Wapiti pushed their lead to 3-1 just a few minutes later, but the Penguins refused to back down and kept skating.  With Speyer pulled from the net for the extra Penguin skater, Trevor Hada ‘20 netted a huge goal to pull Cushing within one goal at 3-2. The assist on the Hada goal went to Josh Levesque ‘20. Cushing felt as though their work on the ice didn’t match the final score and their “puck luck” just wasn’t there, but the Penguins will look to build on the results of today’s game as they move forward and keep improving.

The squad will remain home this Wednesday, January 22nd when they welcome the Hoggers of Northfield Mount Hermon School to Iorio Arena for a 2:15pm puck drop.
