VBBIH vs. Northfield Mount Hermon School: CA-5; NMH-1

Cushing Academy - 5
Northfield Mount Hermon School - 1

Facing adversity as they worked to get back into the win column, the Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey team welcomed the Hoggers of Northfield Mount Hermon School to Iorio Arena on Wednesday afternoon.  The Penguins turned in their most complete effort of the season and took the 5-1 win on home ice.

Although Cushing took the win on the afternoon, it was Northfield Mount Hermon who got on the board first about five minutes into the first period on a rebound goal which got past Penguins goaltender Ben Speyer ‘20.  The Penguins took the Hogger goal in stride and fought right back led by the white line of Trevor Hada ‘20, Caleb Vogel ‘20, and Brendan Dougherty ‘20. In one shift, the white line got pucks deep and scored two goals in less than 30 seconds to change the momentum of the game and put the home team up 2-1.  It was Hada with Cushing’s first goal and assist to Vogel, while Dougherty got the second with assists from Vogel and Hada.

The Penguins took it to the Hoggers to start the second period and increased their lead to 3-1 on a goal by hardworking Nicky Jun ‘23 who buried a Michael Fluty ‘23 shot from the point.  The Cushing defensive unit of Brian Lemay ‘21, David Salcido ‘22, Josh Levesque ‘20, and Fluty, anchored by Speyer between the pipes, held steady until the Penguins got a few insurance goals in the third.  The fourth goal of the game came off the stick of Dougherty for his second of the game with assists to Max Wasserstein ‘21 and Salcido. The final goal of the afternoon for Cushing was from John Lessard ‘20 on assists by Andrew Wolfe ‘23 and Lemay.  As evident by the score sheet, it was a total team effort and the coaching staff is proud of the players’ growth and performance in today’s game.

The team will hit the road this Saturday, January 25th as they head to Tilton, New Hampshire to take on the Rams of Tilton School at 3:00pm.
