VBBIH vs. Phillips Exeter Academy: CA-3; PEA-1

Cushing Academy - 3
Phillips Exeter Academy - 1

The Cushing Varsity B Boys’ Hockey team looked to get back into the win column on Wednesday afternoon when they hosted the Big Red of Phillips Exeter Academy.  Having lost to Exeter on Exeter’s ice earlier in the season, the Cushing squad looked to take the victory on home ice in Iorio Arena and they did so in thrilling fashion.

The Penguins came out of the tunnel motivated to play and they took the lead when newly converted defenseman Trevor Hada ‘20 fired home a one-timer from the point.  The drop back pass to the point for the assist came off the sticks of Caleb Vogel ‘20 and Ryan Kralovec ‘22. With the Penguins up 1-0, they continued to pressure the Exeter team throughout the remainder of the first period, but didn’t convert any chances.  Neither team would get one past the goalies in the second period and the teams entered the third period looking to swing the momentum onto their respective bench. In the third, Josh Levesque ‘20 gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead when the Cushing team rushed down the ice on a 2-on-1 and a nice pass by Vogel to Levesque led to the goal.  It was Vogel’s second assist of the game. Just a few minutes after the Levesque goal, Cushing would add an insurance goal when Levesque buried his second of the day on a breakaway. Exeter broke the shutout with a late goal to close the Cushing lead to 3-1, but it was as close as Exeter would get and Cushing emerged on the afternoon with the victory.

It was a total team effort as all three lines and three defensive pairs played a strong role in front of Penguins goalie Ben Speyer ‘20.  As he has all season, Speyer stood tall between the pipes and turned away 32 of the 33 shots he faced. Following the game, Levesque was named Cushing’s Player of the Game by his teammates for his leadership and stellar play.

The Penguins return to action this Saturday, February 22nd when they travel to Cardigan Mountain School for a 2:00pm puck drop.
