Riding an 11-game win streak, the Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team returned home to the Watkins Field House for a tilt against a strong and upcoming Wilbraham & Monson Academy squad.
With the Titans holding a significant size advantage, the Penguins knew they had to control the pace of play to compete. Early on in the game the size of Wilbraham would get the upper hand and they took a 6-point lead they held onto for the majority of the first half.
The second half was a half where the Penguins knew they had to fight and play at their best to win. They worked towards finding the open man and used a couple runs in the second half (12-4 and 8-0) to take the lead for good as the game came to a close.
Leading the way for Cushing were Bensley Joseph ‘21 (18 points, 7 assists) and Alexis Matos-Reyes (13 points, 6 assists). The unsung hero on the day was Jaden Bobbett ‘21, who drained a couple threes in crucial moments and ended the game with 6 points and an offensive rebound. Bobbett’s offensive board was kicked out behind the arc for a teammate to drain another 3 and keep the momentum on the Cushing bench.
With the 71-68 victory, the Penguins advance their win streak to 12 games as they head to Phillips Exeter Academy on Saturday, February 22nd for a 2:30pm game.
