Quarterfinals NEPSAC AA Playoffs - VBB vs. Bradford Christian Academy: CA-72; BCA-53

Cushing Academy - 72
Bradford Christian Academy - 53

The NEPSAC AA New England playoffs started on Wednesday afternoon with the Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball Penguins hosting the Bradford Christian Academy Sentinels in the Watkins Field House.  With a packed student section and Cushing faithful throughout, the Penguins faced off against the Sentinels for the third time this season. The previous two were victorious for the Penguins, but the latest game needed overtime to be decided so the Cushing squad knew they needed to bring their best game to keep their season alive.

Cushing took the court with the task of keeping their undefeated NEPSAC AA record going, but it would not be an easy task.  The start of the game saw Cushing and BCA trading buckets, but an Isaiah Gray ‘20 (16 points) dunk and multiple assists by Bensley Joseph ‘21 (8 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists) allowed the Penguins to push out to a quick lead.  BCA refused to go down without a fight and a couple transition baskets later they would take their first, and only, lead in the game. The success by the Sentinels was short lived as the Penguins got their groove back and went on a 21-2 run to end the first half with a 37-20 lead.  Leading the charge in the first half run were Malachi Ndur ‘20 (9 points, 4 rebounds) and Sean Okpoebo ‘20 (took 2 offensive charges).

In the second half, the Penguins strung their lead out to 20 and held on for the remainder of the game to take the 72-53 victory.  Other notable performances in the game included Dan Braster ‘20 (9 points, 9 rebounds), Alexis Matos-Reyes ‘21 (12 points, 6 rebounds), and Toby Okani ‘20 (10 points, 6 rebounds).

With the victory, Cushing advances to the semi-finals of the New England Championship and will remain at home as the #1 seed.  Cushing will welcome the Titans of Wilbraham & Monson to the Watkins Field House for a 3:30pm game this Saturday, March 7th. It will be the second meeting of the teams this season with Cushing taking the first meeting in a great match-up.

Final Regular Season Record: 23-6
