Although the dance program did not have a spring dance concert this year, Director Rebecca Rice compiled a number of rehearsal videos that show the hard work our students put in earlier in the term. We hope you enjoy the videos and appreciate the long hours put into creating these "interrupted" pieces:The Advanced Dance Class
focused on learning various interpretations of folk dances from around the world, three in particular: "Espania Mia" (Spain), "Espania Cani" (Spanish Flamenco), and one from Ukraine, "Hopak." These renditions are original dances created by dance artist and modern dance pioneer, Ted Shawn, who creatively merged technical ballet forms with the original folk movements he discovered on his world tour in 1929. The dances were created in the 1930s and taught to Ms. Rice’s grandmother, then passed down to Ms. Rice. The dancers are Anna Zueva '21, Ashleigh Reid '20, Yukina Hiwaki '20, Alexis Macchi '22, Heather Koh '22, and Jane Harmon '22.
Also in the Advanced Class, a special solo about transformation, called "Chopin Prelude" (1920) and created by Ted Shawn, was taught to Ashleigh Reid '20 and Yukina Hiwaki '20. Both students have been in Cushing’s dance program all four of their years on campus, and both have been invited back to perform in our dance concert in fall 2020 as guest artists.
In the Intermediate Class, Matisse Schutten Burgess '23 worked on two pieces this winter, one a ballet work and the other a modern ballet piece of choreography she created focusing on the merging of classical ballet and contemporary dance.
The Beginning Class worked in the modern dance realm and created the choreography project "Enigma." Dancers included Emily Vocatura '22, Kyla Keating '22, Jenny Wang '23, and Marielle Yang '23.
The After-School Dance Program started with a bang: the students immediately began creating their original choreography and were working intensely before spring break.
And last but not least, "Cello Song," a work created to the beautiful music of Gabriel Fauré, was set was ready for performance by the winter dance students. The dancers in costume in the video are Rinka Asakura '20, Yukina Hiwaki '20, Matisse Schutten-Burgess '23, and Chloe Hachey '22.
