MUN study on Eritrea becomes relevant thanks to guest speaker

For many students, readying for the Model United Nations is a task based on reading and online research. At Cushing, however, students had the opportunity to make their experience relevant with a guest familiar with Eritrea, their assigned African country.
On Thursday, November 1, Cushing welcomed Oye Carr, a Ph.D. Candidate in Comparative Modern African Politics at Boston University. Having spent many years living, teaching and studying in Eritrea, Carr served as a sounding board for the MUN group in preparation of their upcoming simulation at Harvard.

In small group settings, Carr met with members of the MUN team and opened discussion for students’ questions on their assigned topic. Covering everything from disarmament to social and economical issues, Carr worked through the topics with the students adding historical – and personal—relevance to students’ analysis and comprehension.

“I was not only intrigued and interested in everything that Mr. Carr had to say, but I was truly inspired to find something which I am passionate about and run with it, as he has done with his African Studies. It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to seek guidance from such a knowledgeable and accomplished person.” – Julia Kleinhans

"Mr. Carr put in perspective how different peoples' lives from other countries can be, but also the similarities we share. He also made me feel so much more grateful for the education I am lucky enough to receive, because other people in the war have to fight for their education and some have no chance of receiving education at all." – Mallorie Goguen
