April 9 marks the 10th Annual Ashburnham-Westminster Community Benefit Hockey Game, but the first year this wonderful event will directly benefit a member of the Cushing community, Cody Wenning. Cody, who was diagnosed with Autism at age 3, is the 17-year-old son of Bill and Marcy Wenning. Mr. Wenning has been a faculty member, coach, advisor, and dorm parent at Cushing for many years, and their other two children -- Amy '00 and Drew ‘06 -- are CA graduates.
This year should be Cody’s senior year of high school, but instead of planning for college in the fall, the Wennings must plan ahead to address Cody’s needs as he transitions from his current school and to life as an Autistic adult with vocational training, continued support services, and constant care. Proceeds from the benefit game, including ticket sales, raffle tickets, auctions, and donations will go to help Cody with adaptive and therapeutic equipment. The Wennings would also like to make a donation to Stepping Stone and STAR Programs at Meeting House School and Westminster Elementary School, two programs that service the needs of autistic children in our community.
“As Cody faces adulthood, he faces a different set of issues,” said his sister Amy in a recent all-school assembly at Cushing. “He may never be able to say ‘I love you,’ but we know he means it every time he looks at my parents, my brother, and me. And instead of feeling sorry for what could have been, we are thankful for his unlimited love and all that he has taught us.”
The Wennings have fought tirelessly to raise awareness about Autism and blaze a trail for other families to be recognized and supported with services. We are grateful as a community that the Wennings have been chosen for this honor and we look forward to celebrating their hard work and honoring their son and brother, Cody.
