Empowering the World’s Poorest Children Through Education
On March 4, Mr. Charles Kane, Director of One Laptop Per Child, addressed students and faculty at an all-school assembly, to share information about OLPC, whose mission is to empower the world's poorest children through education.
“How many brilliant children around the world have not had the opportunity of an education?” asked Kane. “How many never had the opportunity to advance? Education is the backbone of everything and becomes the structure upon which everything in the world’s economy is built. Every child deserves a chance.”
The $150 laptop devices, which are built specifically to resist moisture, dust, and dirt; contain no moving parts; have no open slots; run on very low-wattage, are also made so that the children can make simple repairs themselves. In addition to accessing the Internet, the laptops are pre-loaded with 1,000 books. “These computers open the world to children in the poorest countries. They can have access to the same information any of us have.”
To date, OLPC has distributed approximately 500,000 laptops around the world. The company is currently working on a tablet version it hopes to release in the next three months. Kane’s visit to Cushing was the first time he addressed a high school audience. He hopes to include some Cushing students this summer as OLPC distributes laptops to Peru and Uruguay.
Mr. Kane is a member of the Board of Advisors of Cushing's Institute for 21st Century Leadership and is an Adjunct Professor of International Finance at MIT Sloan School of Management.
