Exploring Effects of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Over spring break, six students in Mrs. Salvucci’s Leadership in an Environmental Crisis seminar traveled to Louisiana to explore and study the effects of the Deepwater Horizon tragedy.
In addition to learning about the impact of the oil spill on both the environment and the community, the students worked alongside conservation farm staff and helped restore wetland habitats with new plantings.

“Our trip with the Oil Spill Seminar students was so positive,” said Mrs. Salvucci. “Watching the students get involved and working along with them to help solve environmental problems was very powerful for me. They engaged in long hours of dirty work during their very precious free time over break and experienced a new culture, new foods, and a different way of life. They gave back to a community well beyond the borders of our campus simply because it was the right thing to do and because they were motivated by the images they saw when the Deepwater Horizon spill occurred last year. In short, our students inspire me.”
