Exploring and Experimenting at The Broad Institute
On Friday, April 22, a group of Cushing students spent the day at The Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT to interact with scientists and researchers working to tackle critical problems in human biology and disease.
CA students began the day exploring the DNAtrium, an interactive hands-on museum of cutting edge discoveries and technologies. They attended a class lead by Dr. Megan Rokop and then headed to the lab where they conducted experiments extracting genomic DNA, separating proteins by size, and examining types of mutations in DNA and protein sequences. During a break for lunch, the group was joined by several scientists who shared their research and discussed careers in biology, chemistry, and computer science. The day concluded with an extensive tour of the facilities, including a look at the enormous robots that are the lab’s workhorses. “This was truly a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity,” said Ryan Bennett ’12, “knowing the work here is at the forefront of the science world.”
