Oxford-Cushing Panel: The Global Economy

What is the role of government in managing an economy? What are the values and dangers of deficit spending? What are the global implications of China's emergence as the world's second largest economy? These, and other student-generated questions, were the focus of the fifth Oxford-Cushing Panel Discussion, held April 27.
Centering on the Global Economy, the discussion included guests Dr. Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor at Harvard University, Harvard Kennedy School; and Dr. Linda Yueh, fellow in economics, St. Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, who joined us via video conference from the BloombergTV studios in London. Headmaster James Tracy moderated. Also participating were three Cushing seniors – Tyler DiMaurao, Byu Pattawan Jareonvongrayab, and Claire Liang – who introduced the speakers and posed questions.

Several schools – from Turkey, Ontario, Chicago, New Jersey, Virginia – joined the Cushing community via WebEx web conferencing and the live stream of the event. Cushing’s Oxford Scholar in Residence, William Davies, led the online component from the Fisher-Watkins Library. Small groups of students viewed the conference remotely from the live feed and tweeted comments and questions during the panel.

Insights from both Dr. Summers and Dr. Yueh made for an engaging discussion. From the delicate balance of spending and taxing, to the vulnerabilities we face in the future, and China’s great potential for growth, our guests shared their own experiences, research, and opinions relating to the present day as well as those our students will face in their lifetimes.
