The sixth Cushing-Oxford Panel Discussion, Modern China and New Confucianism, took place on Wednesday, October 26, and was part of the fall speakers and events series focused on our overarching theme for the fall term, China in Transition in the 21st Century.
Sponsored by the Cushing Institute for 21st Century Leadership, the Panel was comprised of three guests: Dr. Ann-Ping Chin, Senior Lecturer, Department of History at Yale University; Dr. Sam (George T.) Crane, Professor of Political Science at Williams College; and Cushing’s Visiting Oxford Scholar for the fall term, Dr. Janette Ryan, Research Associate, Contemporary China Studies Programme at University of Oxford. Headmaster Tracy served as moderator.
Through a series of questions, our guest panelists shared their perspectives on ancient Chinese philosophy, its role in China’s reunification, and how Confucianism applies in modern society. As the discussion was taking place in Cowell Chapel, several groups of students were selected to watch a live feed in the library while they blogged, tweeted, and discussed moral theory from both a Chinese and Western perspective.
Following the discussion, guests met with Cushing Scholars for lunch and a question/answer session.
Earlier this week, Dr. Ryan visited classes and met with groups of students and faculty on a cross-cultural curriculum project that included brainstorming on workshops, activities, programs, and other means to foster a learning and living environment that is inclusive and respectful of all cultures and ethnicities and to help Cushing students cross cultural (and language) divides to create lasting and meaningful relationships with each other.
