Rebecca Rice, CA Faculty, Premieres Work as Cultural Envoy to Kazakhstan

Recently, Rebecca Rice, a member of Cushing’s Performing Arts Faculty, traveled to Kazakhstan as a “Cultural Envoy” with the U.S. Embassy and State Department.
Ms. Rice was invited to create original work of choreography for the Samruk Dance Company, a modern ballet repertory company in Almaty. The piece premiered on September 10 at the Ballet and Opera House in the capitol, Astana, as part of the country’s 20th anniversary of independence. The evening was supported by the U.S. Embassy and the President of Kazakhstan.

“Kazakhstan’s dance scene has primarily been influenced by the classic and strict Russian Ballet, so the idea of the Embassy was to infuse modern and contemporary dance into the culture,” said Rice upon her return. “It is interesting to note that the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. State Department have recently changed their focus from traditional diplomacy to ‘Cultural Diplomacy,’ as they discovered artists, just by the nature of their work and interactions with people, creating environments that breed trust, positive thinking, and growth.”

Ms. Rice has been working with Cushing dancers for five years. Her mother, Mr. Mona Rice, was the founder of the Cushing dance program.
