Other Penguins First

If you’ve been on campus lately, you may have seen faculty sporting buttons that feature a penguin and the initials OPF. The campaign: Other Penguins First.
Started by Lou Dinkel ’13, the OPF campaign is all about everyday kindness towards one another. In our busy lives when deadlines and hectic schedules can get in the way, it’s easy to forget that a small kindness can mean so much to someone else – holding open a door, picking up trash, a simple thank you. These small actions are exactly what Other Penguins First is based on – to put others first and to lead by example. “We can be better students here at school, but more importantly we can be better people,” says Lou.

Lou designed the OPF buttons, which were distributed to faculty members at the start of the winter term. Seeing an Other Penguins First button is a perfect reminder to help another, to look out for the underdog, to simply do a good deed.

This program is not Lou’s first campaign in recognizing kindness. He has also designed awards whereupon students can recognize a fellow Cushing Academy student’s good deed with a pocket-sized kindness award. Over 80 awards have been handed out to students since its inception of November of 2011.

Faculty are also encouraged to take notice of students putting others first, noting their good deeds in a “Random Acts of Kindness” folder on the school’s intranet.

As mobile phones ring, the daily pace quickens, and the to-do task list becomes longer, OPF is proving to be a great way to recognize and appreciate others here on campus.
