Diversity Day

Human rights and privileges, learning differences, access to education in a developing world – these were just a handful of topics addressed in Cushing’s annual Diversity Day on Tuesday, February 28.
The all-school event began in the dining hall with an Oxfam hunger banquet, which illustrated how food is unevenly distributed in the world. Next, the Cushing community gathered in Heslin Gymnasium to hear the keynote speaker, Hauwa Ibrahim, an internationally renowned human rights lawyer from Nigeria. Ms. Ibrahim won the European Parliament’s Sakhorov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2005 for her pro bono work defending people under the Islamic Sharia laws. Her work defending Amina Lawal, a woman who was sentenced to death by stoning, brought her great notoriety. “Surround yourselves with ideas that are bigger than you are,” urged Ms. Ibrahim. “Leave the world you live in better than how you found it. You have big things to give.”

Students then broke out into small groups for workshops run by faculty, guests, and several young alumni. Cushing was pleased to welcome back Erica Shay ’11, who discussed her work with the group Invisible Children; Lori Schippers ’04 shared her experiences as a member of the Peace Corps, her efforts to promote access to education in Africa, and her organization, Empower Women in Africa; and Jemmel Billingslea ’10, whose workshop focused on the diversity of opinion.

The day concluded with an interactive celebratory dance and music event led by Michelle Bach-Coulibaly and the New Works/World Traditions performance troupe from Brown University.
