A blank canvas is full of possibility and artistic promise. This is also true of a blank wall left to the creative minds of Creighton Mann ’12 and Matthew Pasternak ’12.
Located adjacent to the Fisher-Watkins Library, the Monkey House Radio station is home to a growing number of enthusiastic student podcasters, but the space itself didn’t live up to its fun moniker. That is, until now.
After countless hours sketching and brainstorming, Matt and Creighton decided to take a musical angle. “The original ideas for the mural were fun, but they lacked the spark we wanted in our art,” explained Creighton. In the end, the Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover won out, chosen for its 3D properties and rich, vibrant colors. But it wasn’t just a replication – the artists chose to add a fun twist, substituting John Lennon and company with penguins in honor of the Cushing mascot, and a monkey for the radio station itself.
With acrylic paints and brushes in hand, Matthew and Creighton went to work. For over a year, the two devoted their spare time to the mural, working afternoons, weekends, and even through a fractured wrist.
Now very near completed with their project, both students will continue to add small details until their graduation in May. The colors, details, and whimsy are a wonderful sight. And what originally started as a side project has proven to be an inspiration and lasting gift for future Penguins and Monkey House broadcasters.
