Dreams of Bhutan: A Cross-Cultural Learning Expedition
On March 10th, 2012, seven members of the Cushing community began a 21-day educational expedition to the nation of Bhutan – visiting with Bhutanese families, attending schools, exploring culture, and meeting with representatives of the Bhutanese government, a newly-established constitutional democracy under His Majesty, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck '99, one of Cushing Academy’s most distinguished alumni.
The trip, which was eye opening and life changing in many ways for each of the participants, was just the beginning of Cushing’s ongoing relationship with the developing nation. In August, Cushing will host a symposium with the Bhutan Canada Foundation to help participants explore the question of what education looks like in the 21st century. Special focus will be given to the Kingdom of Bhutan; specifically, on Bhutan's values-based approach to education and their success in developing beneficial global partnerships. This fall, Cushing will provide a scholarship for a Bhutanese student, and this winter, will welcome visiting Bhutanese teachers. Additionally, Cushing plans to partner with a similar-sized school in Bhutan to introduce tablet computer technology.
