In the spirit of an Olympic decathlon, eight freshmen put their minds to the test in the 2012 da Vinci Academic Decathlon.
On Monday, September 24, eight freshmen from Cushing Academy competed in The International da Vinci Academic Decathlon, which emphasizes higher order thinking skills, problem solving, creativity, and collaboration. The day began at 6:30am with Cushing students participating in the opening symposium via Skype with teachers and students from Knox Grammar School in Australia, the hosts of the competition.
Nearly fifty schools from around the globe participated in this rigorous day of academic tasks that encompassed engineering, science, mathematics, philosophy, code breaking, games of strategy, art and poetry, science, English, general knowledge, and creative production. Timed tasks included designing an experiment based on motion, recognizing fallacies and invalid arguments, creating a device to transport an egg as far as possible, analyzing art, images, and literature, solving Algebraic equations, making a short film, creative writing and drawing, and solving alpha-numeric codes.
Competing for the CA team were Mackenzie Burke, Cassidy Caouette, Sam Goodnow, Rachel Guerriero, Piper Harrod, Fred Morlock, Mikaela Mutchler and Kira Tierney, and the members of Cushing’s Innovation Lab (Nancy Boyle, Peter Clarke, Grant Geske, Becca Lefcourt, and Chelle Salvucci,) coached our students. Results of the competition were announced and after all student work was graded and scores were tallied. Team Cushing Academy took first place in the competition! Medals and certificates are on their way to our students. Congratulations, all, for representing yourselves and Cushing with such excellence and skill on the international academic stage.
