Cushing to participate in Critical Issues Forum at Monterey Institute of International Studies.
For the fourth consecutive year, Cushing has been invited to participate in the Critical Issues Forum at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Schools from the United States, Russia, Japan and China will participate in this student forum on nuclear non-proliferation, to be held in Monterey in April 2013 and sponsored by the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. Dr. David Shields will again take part in the November teachers' workshop in Monterey, at which the benchmarks for this year's project will be planned.
The Cushing CIF group will work throughout the winter and spring as an after-school activity, leading up to the spring forum, where they will present their solutions for the most challenging and pressing issues in international peace and security, nonproliferation, and disarmament. Noted Dr. Shields, "CIF draws upon and develops the majority of the skills on which Cushing's 21C Skills Wheel focuses, making this program a wonderful fit for us. Amid the instability of the Middle East and Iran's pursuit of nuclear technology, a focus on understanding global citizenship and leadership puts CIF and Cushing front and center on these initiatives."
Cushing's teams won Awards of Excellence at the 2010 and 2011 Forums, but did not attend last year's Forum, held in Vienna.
