Guest Speaker Carl Wilkens

“Stories and acts of service are our most powerful tools to break down prejudice and build bridges of unity."
Carl Wilkens, director of World Outside My Shoes, spoke at an all-school assembly on October 18. Mr. Wilkens's speaking engagement at Cushing was sponsored by the Virtue Project, a year-long campaign designed by student leaders to promote and model character and virtue.

Mr. Wilkens is the former head of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency International in Rwanda. In 1994, he was the only American who chose to remain in the country after the genocide began. His choice to stay and try to help resulted in preventing the massacre of hundreds of children over the course of the genocide.

Featured in Frontline's Ghosts of Rwanda, Mr. Wilkens’s telling of his own experiences gave a first-hand perspective on genocide, showing us that the perpetrators, victims, and resistors will not soon be forgotten, and that one person really can make a difference. “The most powerful thing we have as humans is our presence.”
