Mock Town Hall Meeting for Civil Society Class

In a battle of wits and politics, students of Mr. Macioci’s Civil Society class recently played the roles of citizens, mayors, and city council members challenged with finding societal resolutions in a mock town hall meeting. Their resolutions needed to satisfy not only the townspeople but also the various characters – such as teachers, police officers, and union members – that were role-played by faculty members.

Issues in everyday politics such as taxes, closing budget gaps, school voucher programs and employment were debated. The students weighed the pros and cons of policies, often having to change or adapt as townspeople (faculty) gave feedback or concerns. The political back-and-forth placed the students squarely in the chairs of today’s town leaders and offered a special firsthand look at just how challenging and rewarding finding political resolutions can be.
