The Spinmobile Arrives

In 1985, Eliot “Spin” Spalding ’71 suffered a brain aneurysm, which affected his memory and mobility. However, he never forgot about the impact Cushing had on his life and in spite of his mobility issues, he came back to the school on the hill for each reunion, despite the fact that the grounds could be a challenge.

When Spin passed away in September 2011, his classmates wanted to honor his strength in a way that would have had deep meaning for him. Together, they donated a golf cart to Cushing, dubbed the “Spinmobile,” which recently arrived on campus. The gift will benefit every visitor to campus by providing valuable transportation for guests with challenges to their mobility and will take its inaugural reunion “spin” in June.

“It is with great affection and pride that I am able to support Spin’s memory and to have known such a wonderful spirit and person,” said one class member of her gift to support the Spinmobile.

Spin also remembered Cushing Academy as part of a bequest. The funds from that bequest will also support the project, ensuring no visitor to Cushing will be frustrated by its terrain.

But while Spin was the inspiration, the class members are not just remembering him with their gift. The full dedication on the vehicle is, "The Spin Mobile, inspired by Spin Spalding, and dedicated to all those loved and lost from the Class of 1971."

The Academy thanks the Class of 1971 for their thoughtful gift. We are touched and inspired by the affection shared by the members of the class.
