Faculty Learn to "Translate the Brain"

Andrew Watson, founder and president of Translate the Brain, returned to Cushing Academy on Monday, March 25, to lead a workshop with our full faculty. The focus of his presentation was classroom implications for the latest developments in brain research, specifically related to the role of emotions in strengthening cognition and learning. According to Mr. Watson, "In-depth knowledge about adolescent emotional systems, and specifically about stress in schools, can help teachers manage teenagers' angst while improving their learning." The morning workshop was followed by afternoon discussions of topics related to residential life at Cushing.

Mr. Watson has an M. Ed. in Mind Brain Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Boston University, and an A.B. from Harvard College. A former dorm parent, English teacher, theatre director and dean of faculty, Mr. Watson has worked at Concord Academy, Loomis Chaffee School, and Phillips Exeter Summer School.
