Mountain Day, one of the Academy’s oldest traditions, was held on Tuesday, Sept. 24, on an absolutely perfect fall day. Instead of heading to class, the entire Cushing community boarded buses and made the short trip north to Jaffrey, New Hampshire’s Mt. Monadnock (elevation 3,166 feet and claimed to be the most climbed mountain in the world) for a day of hiking and a barbecue lunch. With perfect weather and views for miles, it was a great way to appreciate our New England surroundings and enjoy a day outside with fellow Penguins.

Mountain Day Memories:

Mountain Day 1950. September 30 was the date. Being a member of the football team, we were told by coach Heslin to double time up the mountain and back. Football practice would start on time. I remember Mountain Day as very hard on football players. –Bob Blanchard ‘51
Getting lost on the way down in 1952. Gina Hanscom ’53 insisted we were "fine" but we were both scared. Love that mountain. –Paula Nelson ’53
Being the fiftieth to the summit, with the first forty-nine cheering me on. –Glen Hollowood ’01
I vividly and fondly remember our Mountain Day 35 years ago this September! As a Head of School in Hawaii I will climb another set of mountains that day!!! Many thanks for ALL Cushing did for me and does for kids. –Dr. Jack Rizzo ‘79
Being first to the top of the mountain with Wataru Furuya ‘10 on my tail! –Kristina Brown ‘09
