Cushing Scholars Take in Benny Goodman Tribute

On Sunday, Sept. 22, the Cushing Scholars went back in time during a tribute to Benny Goodman by the Capital Jazz Orchestra. These fifteen musicians included Ken Peplowski, a skilled clarinetist and entertainer who played with Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. Impromptu history lessons, lively music, and first-hand accounts of Benny Goodman and his band expanded our students’ musical and cultural appreciation of this part of the American songbook. As Vivian Lu stated, “This was such a wonderful experience for me; it is crucial to learn about the culture and history of music from the 30s and 40s in America.” The jazz orchestra performed twenty-one arrangements that were not transcriptions but the original music performed by The Benny Goodman Orchestra in a 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert obtained from the Benny Goodman estate. Some of the Scholars’ favorites were Tiger Rag, One O’ Clock Jump, Honeysuckle Rose, and Sing, Sing, Sing.
