Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Doctor and the Devils, this year’s fall theatre production.
The Doctor and the Devils was originally a screenplay written in the 1950s by Dylan Thomas, a Welsh writer known for And Death Shall Have No Dominion, Under Milk Wood, and Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night. Originally produced as a screenplay in 1985 by Twentieth Century Fox and directed by Freddie Francis, it starred Timothy Dalton, Jonathan Pryce, Julian Sands, Twiggy, Stephen Rea, and Phyllis Logan. Based on real events, the story focuses on a series of murders in 19th century Scotland, carried out for the sole purpose of feeding the dissection frenzy that was taking place in anatomy labs in Edinburgh.
“I am eternally grateful to [friend and former student] Katherine Stults who suggested this play to me early last summer,” noted Julia Ohm, Director and Performing Arts Chair. “She and Dan Balkin, who originally adapted the screenplay for the stage, came to Cushing from New York City and worked with our cast, teaching them music, deciphering the characters and establishing the experimental ensemble work that exists within the production.
Our cast and crew grew to be completely comfortable with the experimental and creative techniques required to put this particular show together. It was truly remarkable how this unique ensemble of students acted and performed like professionals in a venue that was out of their comfort zone, in terms of traditional theatre. They are to be commended for their adaptability and true creative personas. Many adults in the field are not as free with their imagination and collaborative abilities!”
