Reflections and Celebration at Final Assembly

For Cushing students, this time of year is full of milestones. That is particularly true for our seniors, but our underclass students also feel the effects of the end of a school year, saying goodbye to friends who are moving on and teachers who are retiring or pursuing new opportunities. Among those milestone events is the year’s final assembly, which took place on May 21, 2015.

Assembly began with the final event of Cushing Olympics—impressions of faculty—to determine the final winner for the spring term as well as the year. The impressions were all in good fun and no doubt meant a lot to the faculty. After the impressions, the final tally showed that the young women of Alumni Hall won both the spring term and the year and will get to take the coveted trophy home to Alumni for the year. We’re sure it will look lovely in their newly-renovated common room. Perennial contender Ashburnham House came in a close second.

Next, three seniors—Fiona Kusza, Amanda Wood, and Kylie Caouette—took to the stage for another Cushing tradition: senor vespers. As the other seniors who have gone before them did, the young women talked about their Cushing experience and what it meant to them. There are often common threads in these speeches, none of which will surprise any member of our community. They spoke about the friends they made, the dedicated faculty who supported them inside and outside the classroom, the freedom they felt to choose their own path and try new things, and the life lessons they learned.
The assembly concluded with a song—one that has become a tradition of its own in the last few years. Science teacher Chelle Salvucci and English teacher Rebecca Lefcourt sang Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole’s version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," accompanied by history teacher Bob Macioci.  It was a fitting end to the school year.

We send our best wishes with the Class of 2015 as they move on and we look forward to welcoming our new and returning students back in the fall.
