Academic Support Program

Overview

The Cushing Academy community as a whole recognizes the individual styles and needs of each student. Students participating in our Academic Support Program come from many different schools, states, and countries and have varied academic histories, learning styles, and educational needs. We are here to help students recognize their strengths and weaknesses and develop the tools and skills they need to meet the expectations established by the school, their families, and themselves.

Students who have non-mainstream learning styles may have had some academic difficulties in the past, often affecting their motivation and self-image. They generally experience problems in verbal areas, attention span, and organization, contributing to significant gaps in learning and as well as ineffective study habits. With this in mind, our Department's two primary offerings -- Reading Skills and Academic Support -- provide students with concentrated, individualized instruction in small groups. Our goal is to equip students with skills and habits that will give them confidence and help them achieve academic success.

Students in our program develop stronger verbal reasoning, and fluency in written language, and a wider spectrum of problem-solving skills. They learn to manipulate information derived from reading and other sources and incorporate it into works of their own creation as they write papers and prepare for oral presentations and exams. If needed, teachers will also assist students with their academic work, by helping with assignments, re-teaching basic language and math skills, and conferring on topics to be discussed in class.

Academic Support teachers also assist students and families with requesting accommodations for college testing.

Admission to the program is based upon students' past academic achievement, current academic goals, and diagnostic testing, as well as teacher, counselor, parent or self-referrals. Student progress is assessed by Academic Support faculty as they make placement recommendations for the following year.

There is an $8,000 enrollment fee for the Academic Support Program.
