Academic Support Program

Program Details

Program offerings
For over 30 years, our program has been the best of its kind and is designed to address each student's learning style through the provision of individualized strategies, skills, accommodations, and instructional support.

Cushing's Academic Support faculty work as learning specialists, educational counselors, and advisors. By helping students navigate life and academics in a boarding school environment, our faculty members strive to prepare students to become independent lifelong learners.

How does it work?
Each student is placed with a learning specialist who, as an academic coach, uses current research in brain-based learning to provide instruction and advice, reviews setbacks for better understanding of what and how to change, and celebrates successes.

Students meet with their learning specialist four times each week during a regularly-scheduled class period.

Using the students' content area class assignments for materials, learning specialists help students develop a variety of strategies for improving organization and time management, reading comprehension, vocabulary and word skills, written expression, note taking, test preparation and performance.

Learning specialists monitor each students' progress and receive regular communication about performance from content teachers.
