Russian Icons & African Art

Over the weekend, faculty members Bob and Carolyn Johnson and Alec Coyle traveled with 10 student artists to visit the Museum of Russian Icons and the Gallery of African Art in Clinton, Mass. (approximately 30 minutes south of Ashburnham).

Founded by art collector Gordon B. Lankton, the Museum of Russian Icons houses more than 1000 Russian icons and artifacts. It is the largest of its kind in North America, and one of the largest private collections outside Russia. Spanning six centuries, the collection includes important historical paintings dating from the earliest periods of icon "writing" to the present.

The Gallery of African Art also began with the private collection of Gordon Lankton. Through donations and acquisitions, it has grown to include masks, figures, household items, religious icons, vessels, musical instruments, tools, textiles, and jewelry. Additionally, it features interactive exhibits and tours to allow visitors to experience and feel African culture.

The visiting students are all serious about painting and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
