Announcing Commencement Speaker: Artist Will Day '89
Cushing is honored to announce that artist Will Day ’89 has accepted our invitation to be our keynote speaker at the Academy’s 141st Commencement on May 28, 2016. Below is an e-mail that Headmaster Chris Torino sent to all members of the senior class at the end of last week to share this exciting news.
Dear Class of 2016,
With the turn to the 2016 calendar, the year of your graduation from Cushing is officially here. Hard work, eureka moments, college decisions, memorable times with friends, and many "lasts" of your Cushing experience will continue to unfold over the coming months, and the faculty and I are cheering you on in every step of this final stretch.
Because I'm traveling internationally and, therefore, cannot share this news with you in person, I'm emailing to let you know terrific news about your graduation ceremony. Artist Will Day, a 1989 graduate of Cushing, has accepted the invitation to be our keynote speaker, continuing the sixth year of a proud tradition of having an alumnus/a speaker. Will is deeply honored and very excited to share this special day with you, and he and his family plan to arrive a few days ahead of Graduation, to immerse themselves in the community and the events of the week.
A nationally-recognized Contemporary Abstract Expressionist, Will describes his path to a fulfilling career as an artist as "the scenic route," with service in the Peace Corps in Tunisia and careers in the New York financial world and then in architecture and real estate development in Los Angeles, before he returned to his love of painting. His journey is fascinating, and I know that his passion and commitment will inspire us all.
His art is featured in public and private collections throughout the United States, and you may have seen the stunning painting that he donated to Cushing, which hangs in the Main Hall next to the Business Office.
Raised in Connecticut, Will received his Bachelor's degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and his Master's in Architecture from Pratt Institute in New York City. He and his wife Aimee and their children reside in Boulder, Colorado (where I have visited him in his art studio). I encourage you to read more about Will and his work at his website at http://www.willdayart.com.
As a community, we very much look forward to welcoming Will back to Cushing and to celebrating each of you at our 141st Commencement.
