Using Chinese Philosophy to Change Lives

Journalist and author Christine Gross-Loh joined us for the final event in our inaugural Diversity Forum Series on April 3. She delivered a thoughtfully engaging presentation on Chinese philosophy drawn from her recently published book, The Path, (co-authored by Harvard professor Michael Pruett). She shared the idea that our lives can be changed by Confucius and the Daoists. For example, the practice of purposeful yet simple daily rituals, such as holding the door for others, can lead to new ways of experiencing life. After the event, long-time faculty member, Madame Storm reflected, “She was just lovely. Her talk validated the message we have been teaching - the importance of thinking outside of the box - and I really appreciated how the philosophy can ground us during a time like now when the chaos in the world makes us feel so vulnerable.” A junior shared his appreciation for how “concise she was. She managed to get a lot of information across in a short period of time.” The interactive portion of the event, when she challenged us to connect with someone we did not know and respond to thought provoking questions, successfully brought together members of the community and gave us the opportunity to dive into meaningful dialogue. It was a great night!
