Performing Arts Series: A Night of Movement Theatre
On Apr. 16, Michelle Bach-Coulibaly (PP '12) brought her troupe of international dancers to Cushing to present A Night of Movement Theatre, the last event in this year’s series of professional performances. Coulibaly is an educator, choreographer and movement specialist who teaches in the Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown University, and at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center’s National Theatre Institute and Theatre Makers. Her works incorporate new music compositions, film work, and art installations that address social, political, and environmental concerns.
One of the offerings, Put Up Your Dukz is part of a year-long investigation into youth culture through the decades. Originally “Dukz” was choreographed in collaboration with the Brown Jazz Orchestra in 1999 to commemorate Duke Ellington’s 100th birthday, where it toured London, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Seventeen years later, it has been revamped and reexamined as a statement of who we are now. Utilizing students from Brown, and area dancers in Rhode Island, Coulibaly utilizes and examines Hip-Hop culture as a manifesto to healing wounds, and the ever-present power of youth that continues to lead us forward in addressing the unanswerable.
Michelle Coulibaly is part of a founding team of the Yeredon Centre for Art, Culture and Social Engagement in Mali, West Africa, where she works closely with international organizations in Mali and the USA to support transnational collaboration, cultural preservation, public health, and humanitarian projects.
The Cushing community and audience members from the local community thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Dates for the 2016-2017 series coming soon!
