On Tuesday, Feb. 28, Peter Bidstrup, former coach of the Governor's Academy lacrosse team, visited Cushing's campus and spoke to the students during school meeting.
Coach Bidstrup is a long-time member of the independent school community. His father was a 43-year faculty member at one school, where Peter grew up, and Peter spent more than 20 years at Governor's Academy.
Coach Bidstrup had some words of wisdom about how to find success and to take advantage of the opportunities they have. "You have a choice," he said. "You can soak up everything you can while you're here, or you can wish you were somewhere else."
He encouraged the students to be themselves, a not altogether easy task in a world that pushes people to conform. He told them to pursue meaning rather than happiness. Finding meaning leads to lasting happiness, rather than instant gratification.
He told them to embrace challenge and live in the process. Challenge is growth, he told them, and outcomes are what's important. He encouraged them to be kind and to never give up. "When you're kind to others, kindess comes back to you," he said.
