Photographing "Going Home"

Cushing is a diverse community with people from all over the globe. “Home” means something different to each of us. For the Advanced Photography class' "Going Home" project, students photographed what “home” means to them over the Thanksgiving and winter breaks. They covered every aspect of their visits--what they did and with whom, where they went, and what they saw. Their photographs allow us an intimate glimpse into their unique lives. The pictures give us a sense of who they are and where they come from.

The "Going Home" exhibit is fully run by the students. Besides taking the photographs, they also helped each other edit through hundreds of pictures and were challenged with selecting just three final photos each. The class decided on the layout of the photos and hung the show in the Fisher-Watkins Library. To accompany the photographs, students wrote an artist’s statement describing their approach to photography and explaining the story behind their trio of photos. The most gratifying step was the opening reception on Friday, Mar. 3.

“I've found that students find this project to be the highlight of the year-long course,” said their instructor, Ms. Cinclair. “The opening reception is an exciting event for them and they are proud to share their work in a professional way.”
