Captain Jack Molan Visits Cushing

On Friday, Oct. 6, the Cushing community welcomed Captain Jack Molan as a guest speaker after a warm introduction by his friend, our own Mark Burke.

During the last years of his fishing career, Capt. Jack was featured on “Deadliest Catch” as captain of Aleutian Ballad and Cornelia Marie. Now on his “Great 48 State Tour” with his wife Joanne (who accompanied him to campus), Capt. Jack described the harrowing life of a Bering Sea fisherman with his striking photography on view.

Brutal winter conditions left ships coated in heavy ice, which required immediate removal to prevent the vessel from tipping on its side. Unpredictable rogue waves tested the preparation and endurance of crews and fishing vessels alike.

Yet for all of the danger, there was an equal amount of beauty to be seen in the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands. Bald eagles flew alongside his boat to pick at bait and fish scraps. The majesty and ever-changing character of the ocean was within full view. Capt. Jack took to capturing these moments after he purchased a tiny Canon camera out of an airport vending machine years ago.

Capt. Jack now enjoys a strong following of his photographs, tours the country as a public speaker, and even has a book under his belt, “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up: My Thirty Years in the Bering Sea”. Using these different platforms, Capt. Jack educates people from across the world about a lifestyle that isn’t well-understood but that gave him a wealth of memories and life lessons.

Drawing from his decades of experience and leadership, Capt. Jack told our students that they will find themselves in a variety of challenging situations. “Don’t lose your wits!” he insisted. Capt. Jack encouraged our Penguins to apply forethought, emotional control, and independent thinking to keep their heads above water in times of struggle.
