Cushing’s 13th Head of School Appointed

Dear Cushing Alumni, Parents and Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am delighted to announce the Board's unanimous appointment of Dr. Randy R. Bertin as the thirteenth Head of Cushing Academy, effective July 1, 2018.

As Head of School since 2011 at Besant Hill School in Ojai, California, Randy leads a vibrant and internationally diverse learning and living community.  His commitment to students and his passion for excellence in academic and residential life, the arts, and athletics shone in his interviews and meetings with our Search Committee, the Board, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents. Before his appointment as Head of School of Besant Hill, Randy served there as director of admissions and financial aid, director of advancement, and assistant head of school for advancement.  He previously spent seven years at Stoneleigh-Burnham in Massachusetts, where he taught science and was an athletic trainer, dorm parent with his wife Karen, director of athletics, and development officer.

Randy was awarded his Doctor of Education from Pepperdine University. He received his M.S. in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and his B.S. in Kinesiology: Athletic Training from the University of New Hampshire. Randy and Karen are proud parents of four children, and the Bertins look forward to making their home in this wonderful community and to returning to their New England roots. Randy asked us to pass along the following statement to you:

"The wonderful community, student-focused philosophy, and dedication to a successful future of the school are what drew me to Cushing Academy. During my visit, Karen and I immediately felt at home in each meeting and conversation we had with students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, alumni, and trustees. I am honored and humbled to have been selected to join Cushing Academy and am looking forward to being on campus and working hard to serve each member of the community."

We are grateful to the Search Committee, including Chair Melissa Irving Christensen '00; Liz Akers P'10, '13, '17; Mark Burke; Stewart DeLeon '19; Saundra Edwards P'18; Mary Frances Hanover; Heather Hill '90; Stirling Ince; James Kraskouskas '65; Cathy Melanson; Harry Powers P'05, '08, '14; Chuck Schaefer GP'17; Brian Teixera '99; Yashi Thakurani '18; and Sue Hawkes Wight P'06.  We also thank each of you who shared your input through surveys at the start of the search and who met with the finalists on campus, providing valuable feedback after those visits.  It is a tribute to the entire community that Randy has accepted this position.

Finally, we would like to express our deep gratitude to our interim Co-Heads of School Peggy Lee and Catherine Pollock for their continued exemplary leadership and tremendous dedication to our students and community during this period of transition.

With more than 150 years of proud history and tradition, Cushing continues Thomas Parkman Cushing's founding commitment to "strengthening and enlarging the minds of the rising and future generations."  As we fulfill our mission to exist for students and to develop curious, creative, and confident learners and leaders, we invite and welcome your continued partnership in this important work.

Sincerely,
