Tournament Champions!

The finale of the
44th Annual Groton School/Lawrence Academy 2017 Boys’ Holiday Hockey Tournament featured Cushing Academy's Varsity Boys' Ice Hockey team and Culver Academy, who came in ranked as the #1 U18 AAA hockey team in the country with a record of 16-0.

The Penguins came out strong, but the first period was scoreless.  A missed back-check lead to a Culver goal, and it was 1-0 Eagles after two periods.  The third period was all Penguins as Nolan McElhaney, who took home the tournament MVP award, knocked in a bouncing puck 34 seconds into the final period to tie the game at one.  Four minutes later Matt McGrath ripped a shot that would prove to be the game-winner.  Just 33 seconds later, Michael Outzen added the insurance marker.  The three-goal, five-minute flurry, was all Cushing would need to take home the hardware.  Joe Sharib made 26 saves in the winning effort, while the Penguins penalty killers went 4 for 4 including the killing of back-to-back penalties late in the third period.  The Penguins were a perfect 4-0 in the tourney, scoring 15 goals and only giving up four, and now have an 8-1-1 record.

Thanks to all Penguins' families, friends, faculty and fans for your support throughout the whole tournament.  Next up: Thurs. 12/28 vs. NMH at 11:10 am as part of the Watkins Tournament at Iorio.  Happy and safe holidays!
