Adventures in Paper Marbling

Inspired by illuminated manuscripts of the medieval age, Ms. Hathaway’s Art History class plans to bind their own books by hand. Students will be able to choose the size of their book and will learn a variety of stitching methods.

This week, the class was given a lesson in paper marbling. It’s a technique friendly to artists of all skill levels and the results can be unexpected, yet fun.

Students began the process by dropping multiple colors of oil-based dye into a tray filled with water. Using a needle tool, they carefully swirled the colors around. Once satisfied with the pattern they had created, the students placed a piece of paper on the surface of the water for a few seconds to let the image absorb. Then, very carefully, the cardstock was lifted from the solution to reveal a mesmerizing print.

Each student was able to produce at least three prints, which will be used as endpapers in their hand-bound books.
