Art History and Photography Travel to deCordova

The Art History and Advanced Photography classes went to the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park on April 26. Students saw the exhibitions Sculpting with Air: Ian McMahon and Jong Oh, and Lived Space: Humans and Architecture.

The Art History students have been studying environmental sculpture and artists that use natural materials to make art. Sculpting with Air showcased two contemporary sculptors that created very different site-specific artworks by shaping the intangible element of air. Ian McMahon created voluminous, pillow-like forms using an innovative technique of sprayed plaster. Jong Oh fashioned almost imperceptible structures with string, wire, and Plexiglas.

The students also walked the sculpture park, which occupies 30 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns, forests, fields, gardens, and terraces on a rolling site along the shore of Flint's Pond in Lincoln, Massachusetts. At any given time, approximately 60 sculptures are on display in the Sculpture Park.

The Advanced Photography students recently completed their Going Home exhibition, which explored what home means to each of them. They were able to see the exhibition Lived Space, where artists explore "our psychological and physical attachments to the places we build and inhabit. In their work, interior rooms function as receptacles of memory, emotion, and identity." A fitting follow-up to their own work!
