CUSHING WINS OPENER IN DECISIVE FASHION

The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Hockey Penguins kicked off the season with a home game against Kents Hill School just prior to the Thanksgiving holidays.  The Penguins did not disappoint the many students, faculty, family, and friends who were in attendance as they dominated from start to finish and skated into the holiday break with an 8-2 victory.

Led by co-captain Patrick Borella ’19 (Hudson, MA) and his line mates Connor Wood ‘20 (St. Albans, VT) and Nick Cafarelli ‘20 (Middleton, MA), the home team outshot Kents Hill 22-3 in the first period and took a 2-0 lead on a pair of Borella goals. The assists on both tallies went to Borella’s line mates Wood and N. Cafarelli.  The goal of the night, his first as a Penguin and the eventual game-winner, came off the stick of Cushing first year player Jacob Banks ‘20 (Westminster, MA).  While short-handed Banks picked up the puck from Shane Zarcone ‘20 (Huntington, NY) and flew down the left wing on a breakaway.  Banks took advantage of the angle and zipped it clean top left to give the Penguins a commanding 3-0 lead early in the second frame.  The Penguins rolled during the rest of the second period netting three more on goals by Wood, Jake Murphy ‘20 (Westford, MA) with his first as a Penguin, and Cody Sealey ’21 (Worcester, MA) on the power play.

The hit of the night was delivered by Jackson Dorrington ’22 (North Reading, MA) when he played the one-on-one to perfection and put the Kents Hill forward down with a clean open ice check.  Jackson and his older brother Max, both playing in their first Cushing game, each recorded an assist on the afternoon.  Goalie, Joe Sharib ‘20 (Natick, MA) was perfect through two periods and first year Cushing net minder, Rio Kauffman ’21 (Glenwood Springs, CO) played the third period to preserve the win.  Although Kents Hill managed to score a pair of goals in the third period, Cushing answered each time when N. Cafarelli lit the lamp twice in the third period to cap off a stellar Penguin debut and he finished the night with five points.  Borella and Wood also recorded five points each to start the Cushing season with a bang.

After a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday break, the team will return to campus to prepare for their first road trip of the young season as they head to Dexter Southfield School on Wednesday Nov. 28th for a 3:30pm game.
